With the 2010 World Cup just around the corner, football fans everywhere will soon be gearing up to watch and support their favourite teams. Some will experience the event via television, while others plan to journey to South Africa to witness the games in person. Either way, many people are likely to want time off from work in order to enjoy this year’s World Cup.

For employers everywhere, this could mean various things. It could, for instance, mean that many of their employees will be requesting time off at the same time – which could result in some people not getting that time off.  It could also mean that some employees will call in sick – especially if they’re not given the time off due to so many requests being made at once. The event will also likely change expectations of employees in the workplace. For example, many employees might expect more flexibility in hours, so that they’re able to watch the games. Employers, on the other hand, might fear a decrease in productivity due to such expectations. With expectations and fears such as these running rampant in the workplace, tensions can run high – meaning business could suffer. But there are various ways to manage expectations, attendance, and holiday requests – even during an event as significant as the World Cup.

Social media has taken the marketing world by storm and ignoring it can result in lost market share and opportunities to promote brand awareness among a far wider community of prospects that traditional media can ever hope to reach. An amazing business tool, if used correctly can open up an entirely new communication channel to enable businesses engage with customers, obtain valuable insights and respond in an appropriate manner to gain brand equity and increase the level of trust with the company. Besides, by using available measurement tools the effectiveness of the conversations that businesses have with prospects can be measured closely, allowing them to fine tune their social media campaigns to deliver the maximum impact.

    Planning for success

Participation in social media requires thought and planning without which the whole exercise can easily turn into a huge waste of time. This makes it imperative to have a structured approach while considering a social media campaign. The preliminary step is to listen to the conversations that may already be occurring about yourself or your organisation. One way of doing this is by setting up an RSS feed that aggregates results from social media sites. Make sure that you analyse competitor activities and are able to determine your competitive strengths and weaknesses so you can counter threats and take advantage of the opportunities presented as you progress with implementing your strategy.

Business owners and department heads get so wrapped up in what they are trying to do for their company that they often forget about the most important piece of business… the customer. It may sound ironic but most of the sales consulting jobs that I accept have this following theme in common. They all say, “We have a successful business but we are not moving forward.” What is the issue?

You know the drill, I bet it is happening to your company or department right now. You are going through your day to day routine. There are fires to put out, documents to review, spreadsheets to create, advertising copy to evaluate and sales representatives that need coaching.

On top of all of that you are not moving forward. Your sales have moved south yet your sales expense is moving north. You got that feeling in your gut that you may need some help.

If you are a small business owner, I hope you have a website. Even if that small business of yours deals with local clients and customers, an online website can go a long way. In fact, many internet users even like to research local businesses online first. So lets say that you get yourself a website and you do some marketing. Great; you are on the right track. But there is one more thing I’d like you to do. I’d like you to go out and find some small business sales leads. These leads are what will connect you with your targeted market. Whether you contact them via email or phone, you can point them in the direction of that online website of yours.

Now, it is a good idea to find some small business sales leads. What you do is search for leads or people who are interested in what you have for sale. You find them and make contact. Whether this contact is over-the-phone or via email, your goal is to entice them to become a customer. You can provide a link to your online store, discuss some of the products or services you sell, and even offer a promotional discount “just for them.”

Recently, we have seen a large shift in the style of policing in the UK; there is now a much greater focus on community based policing and providing a reassuring presence on our streets. To this effect, we now see many PCSO officers roaming our streets and engaging in our community. PCSO stands for Police Community Support Officer and there are likely to be many more in the future. It’s little wonder therefore that many people are considering becoming a PCSO.

Crimes that effect local people in a voluminous nature such as theft and antisocial behaviour are on the rise and becoming a PCSO is a good way to help tackle this growing problem. Such crimes aren’t devastating but are still incredibly annoying and sometimes intimidating. For this reason it has hit the headlines on a number of occasions and the number of young people wandering the streets with little to do has worried many residents.
