The economic recession in America is what everyone is talking about. Its in the news, your local coffee shops, in your neighborhood, at the office, even at your dinner table. For some the recession is not a problem, and for others it can be pure suffering. Are you one of those that are suffering? In this article there are 3 topics that I would like to cover. Lets start with the first one.

    How Long Will it Last?

Breath, depth and duration are the most important key factors to a recession. And even though for now it is way to soon to even try to say anything about how long the recession will last. by looking at the data that supports the views that every business, but exports are feeling the effects. Exports can boost the economic growth, but not the growth for the employment.

As for now there seems to be agreement on when the recession started. It is believed to have started in December of 2007. This agreement was stated by the December 3 article by cnnmoney.com, while there is not much talk about how long this recession will last.

I am British but have always been interested in American politics. I have recently been fascinated by the major news broadcasters bias against the Presidents health care bill. Fox News in particular has a campaign going against this bill. I would like to give you a Brief History of the National Health Service in the UK. It was introduced in 1948 by the then Health Minister Aneurin Bevan [A Welshman like myself] Aneurin or Nye as he was called had the same problem that faces President Obama and that was the rich powerful minority did not want the poor majority of the nation to have free healthcare. In fact the only way Nye got the Heath Service going was to bribe the wealthy hospital consultants by allowing them to have private patients as long as they committed to work so many hours for the National Health Service. He later famously said “I stuffed their mouths with gold” The only obstacle left was the Doctors who only weeks before the National Health Service was to be introduced voted overwhelmingly against joining.

Now the only group of people capable of changed these Doctors minds were British Women. These women had seen what sacrifices their mothers had made looking after the family through the second world war and had seen them grow old prematurely as a result, they felt they deserved better healthcare so they boycotted those Doctors who would not sign up, the Doctors soon fell in line and so the National Health Service was born. What is also interesting is that a Labour Government introduced this bill, no Conservative Government [and there has been many since 1948] have dared to change it. The republican party of America should take note that if they ignore this potentially strong group of lower income women it could cost them any chance of winning a future presidential election.

I was parked at a red light this morning on my way to work and I saw a man sitting in a wheel chair. He had things attached to it on many sides: knapsack, folded up tarp, broken chair, blanket and bags of things not visible to me. He was waiting for his light to change so that he could go to wherever he was planning to go. This is his world. I could imagine why he was where he was but I could not know his story.

I have someone very close to me who was in a head on collision just over a year ago. He suffered brain damage. Without the help of our family, he would be on the street. We, as a society, don’t take care of our injured and our mentally ill. We don’t take care of our addicts and we don’t take care of high-risk people. High- risk people are born with disabilities and disadvantages.

People who have no home have dropped through the cracks. They are from fractured families or have undiagnosed mental and physical conditions. We don’t deal with mental illness well.

    Magnitude of the Earthquake

The Haiti Earthquake was a 7.0 on the Richter logarithmic scale. There is no maximum size on the scale. In comparing the Haiti earthquake to those against history, the largest earthquake ever was in Chile with a 9.5 on the Richter scale. The most recent earthquake in San Francisco (1989 Loma Prieta) was also a 7.0 earthquake. The Resulting damage is more devastating in Haiti due to building style and the epicenter location.

    How Many People Have Died

The death toll is, at this time, is unclear, but Haiti officials fear that there will be around 100,000 that will be killed from the earthquake. Some other officials estimate that the death toll will be in the 30-50 thousand range. This makes the Haiti Earthquake one of the most devastating in history.

According to the US Geological Survey, since 1990, there have been four earthquakes that have had death tolls over 50,000. The largest death toll, since 1990, was 227,898 off the west coast of Northern Sumatra. The Loma Prieta earthquake, in San Francisco (with similar magnitude), had a death toll of 63.

In the aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, the United States has taken the lead in bringing relief to the suffering people of that ravaged country. The cost is estimated to be 100 million and there are many in the United States questioning the practicality of spending that kind of money when our country is running a deficit in the trillions.

I have a solution to the problem. If all of the CEO’s of large companies, especially those that received TARP money would forgo their huge bonuses this year and send that money to Haiti. In this way they could help our neighbor to the south in a time of dire need and pay back the American people, many of whom are suffering themselves due to the recession. According to the New York Times, Goldman Sachs will pay its employees an average of $595,000 each, JPMorganChase $463,000. Financial institutions are seeing record profits from 2009 and Citigroup, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley together set aside approximately $90 billion for compensation.

Many individuals have been asked and are donating money, clothing, water and food and they are stepping up to do so. Rescue teams and medical teams from around the world are flying in to help. Haiti suffered from four deadly hurricanes in 2008 and was just now getting back on its feet, only to have one of the worst earthquakes in 200 years hit that country of almost nine million people. There are 45,000 Americans in Haiti, many of them unaccounted for at this point.
