The iPad can run iPhone apps at their original size, or in “pixel doubled mode” twice the size as on the iPhone, so that they nearly fill the iPad screen. However, I think Apple made the right decision in not attempting to build a physical keyboard into the tablet. The goal of the iPad is to bring your data and web surfing up close for an intimate feel. A keypad would simply get between you and the screen.

The on-screen keyboard is much larger, of course, than what is possible on the iPhone. In landscape mode, the keyboard is almost as large as that on a standard laptop. With just a few tweaks to the word recognition and auto-correction features of the iPhone software, typing on this virtual keyboard, I suspect, could be almost as fast as using a real one. Plus, I believe that voice dictation apps could come quickly to the iPad, just as they have to the iPhone.

And, of course, the iPad includes all of the same features as the iPhone, only in a larger form–video, YouTube, the iPod and iTunes, interactive satellite maps, the notepad, a calendar completely redesigned from the ground up for the iPad, Contacts and Spotlight search.

The iPad will be shipped in three different internal storage configurations and with the option of Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G, for a total of six different models. The base model, the 16 GB Wi-Fi only, will start at a reasonable $499, while the top of the line 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G model will tip the scales at a still affordable $829. Apple has said that, while most new technologies are introduced at a higher price point and slowly work their way down, Apple wanted to do things differently.

When will the iPad be available? Apple expects the Wi-Fi models to ship in late March and the 3G models to ship in April.

The thinness, just 0.5 inches, the light weight, just 1.5 pounds, and the flexibility of this new device are sure to make the iPad popular with Internet marketers and anyone on the go. In a solid display of football Argentina dominated in what was a convincing 4-1 win over South Korea to assure themselves a place in the round of 16. Argentina controlling much of the play was able to score 15 minutes in to the game when an unfortunate bounce deflected of South Korea’s Chuyung and in to the back of the net for what would be the first goal of the game. It was once having taken the lead that Argentina, inspired by Messi pressed forward in attack in what looked to be a rout early on. It being Argentina imposing their South American flair and ball control.

Argentina would not wait long for their second goal which came at the 32 minute mark when an unmarked Higuain headed in his first goal of the game; from a position which at first did give the appearance of being offside yet the replay clearly demonstrated that all had been according to the rules. It being then that Argentina perhaps took on too much confidence which led to South Korea’s only goal when in the last minute of the first half; Lee Chong Yong took advantage of a defensive error to put South Korea within striking distance.

The start of the second half however would not see a change in the game which continued with Argentina showing the ability many had talked about before the start of the tournament. Maradona’s team clearly being in command, continued to press forward for a third goal which would come in the 75th minute of the game when Higuain from close range tapped the ball in to an empty goal. This after the ball had bounced off the South Korean post which set up what could be classified as a very easy goal.

Two minutes would go by for Higuain to get his third and Argentina’s fourth for the match when his header found its way in to the back of the net to complete the first hat trick of South Africa 2010. Argentina for its part becomes the first team to qualify for the second round in what can be called a much improved performance from their first against Nigeria. Maradona perhaps finally realizing that certain players whose age has gone beyond that of youth, such as Veron; should be left on the bench. South Korea, though defeated is from eliminated; as a win in their last match against Nigeria should qualify them in to the round of 16.

It was a slow start for the Greeks which saw them trailing just 15 minutes in to the game when Kalu Uche’s free kick made its way in to the back of the net; after having gone past several on coming players to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead. It even seeming that Nigeria would go on to defeat Greece with the same ease they had done in USA 94 yet the Greek team thanks to determined play and their veteran captain, Karagunis managed to not loose control of the game.

Fortune however would favor the Greeks when Nigerian midfielder, Sani Kaita was shown the red card for an incident which does not really show him doing much that would merit such a reaction but raise his knee to an opposing player; it not even being clear weather or not he even made contact. Nigeria however would be reduced to playing with ten men which more than anything seemed to inspire the Greeks to go forward which they did and it was with two minutes left in the half that Dimitrios Salpigidis’s right footed shot bounced off a Nigerian player and in to the back of the net. This not only being the equalizing goal but Greece’s first ever goal in a world cup match.

The second half would see Greece continue to dominate and it was at the 70 minute mark of the game that Vassilis Torosidis would pounce on a shot which Nigerian goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama in all truth should have handled without too much difficulty. Greece at that point was ahead in the scoreboard and thus they would stay till the end of the match; to get their first ever win in a world cup. All in a match which was for the most part one of excitement and opportunities on both sides yet Greece would prevail.

Greece however is far from qualified as in order to do so they would need a Nigerian win against South Korea and to get at least a draw against Argentina. This due to not only South Korea having scored more goals but having beaten them in head to head competition. All of which making an interesting scenario for the group’s last two matches. As in theory Nigeria is not yet out and Argentina could still be eliminated even though this option is highly unlikely as they would have to lose by at least 4 goals to Greece. Nigeria however with a win over South Korea and an Argentine win over Greece could still end up in the second round.

France in all honesty did not play badly yet Mexico showed all the enthusiasm and passion of their country which led them to a 2-0 win in a game which started off at a very fast pace which was held through out the first half with both sides taking turns in dominating. France perhaps attacking more while Mexico getting the better chances yet the half would end goalless. All in a first half which was more exiting than the score would indicate.

The second half would start much like the first half ended though Mexico would slowly start to create more and more chances as they began to dominate yet could not find their way to the goal; they so desperately wanted. It being then that like in their first match against South Africa, Mexican coach Aguirre decided to bring on Blanco; who again had a tremendous impact on the game. Blanco being vital in adding creativity to Mexico as well as experience. All of which leading to Mexico getting their first goal 63 minutes in to the game when Hernandez thanks to a pass by Marquez was able to beat the offside trap along with France’s goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. It was after this goal that French spirits seemed to deflate while Mexico grew in the confidence that would lead to their second goal. It arriving via a penalty following a foul by Eric Abidal on Pablo Barrera. A clear penalty it was which veteran Blanco did not fail to convert. As Mexico took a 2-0 lead which they would hold on to till the end of the game.

As for Mexico, it can be said that they are just about qualified to the next round and all they need is a draw against Uruguay which would see both teams through regardless of whatever may occur in the match between South Africa and France.

As an extra note, I would like to add that I am glad for my friend, Alejandro from Mexico that his country was able to win and I am sure celebrations will follow in Mexico D.F., as in all honesty; it was a hard fought victory.

It happened back in the 70′s, but the evidence was still there. It was the case of the disappearing horsepower and this is what happened.

In the era of the muscle car power was everything. It didn’t matter what it was, sports car, family car, pickup; it had the biggest V-8 possible stuffed under the hood. Cubic inches were king and advertised power was astronomical. These cars could kick sand in the windscreens of anything else on the road.

But then horsepower seemed to disappear overnight!

Take my favourite muscle car, the Ford Mustang. The macho models had V-8s, though meeker models came with an inline six. The biggest six had 200 cubic inches and 155 hp in 1969/70.

What did the V-8s punch out? The most powerful 351 gave 300 hp in 1970 and the 427 gave a massive 390 hp in 1968. But by 1973 the most powerful Mustang had a 351 V-8 with just 156 hp. Almost half what it had in 1970, and only one horsepower more than the 200 cu in six of 1970!  As for the Mustang II of 1974, we won’t even go there.

The story was similar with the other manufacturers. What was going on? It just didn’t add up. Could I trust the figures?

My detective mentor, Agatha Christie, taught me that when you’re solving a case you can’t trust anyone. Murderers do lie.  In this case it wasn’t murder though it was the death of the muscle car, and it wasn’t so much of an outright lie as not telling the whole truth. And outside forces were at play.

I had to dig deeper. I had to find the facts. Why would horsepower virtually halve?

It turned out there were a few reasons. Salesmanship was one.  Horsepower was everything so why not measure it in a salesman friendly way? Gross SAE horsepower was used. Power was measured at the flywheel with no power-hungry accessories attached. Only the bare essentials were used.

In 1972 SAE Net measurements were phased in. Power was still measured at the flywheel but all the accessories were installed including the full exhaust system, emission controls, all pumps and the alternator. SAE Net can’t be compared exactly to SAE Gross because there are just too many variations in measuring, but it is down around 80%. So power ratings dropped. In 1973 horsepower ratings went down again as power sapping emission controls were tightened.

Gross SAE horsepower had pushed the listed power up.  So did the advertised horsepower some car companies used. What’s wrong with a little rounding up of the numbers for the brochure? Surely that would help sales too.

All this horsepower galloping around got noticed and not just by young guys.

Safety legislators noticed, and so did insurance companies who started charging more for insurance. The word on the street is that in 1967 a young guy under 25 with a clean driving record would have paid $700 a year for GTO coverage. Ouch! Some car companies lowered their advertised horsepower ratings.

Muscles peaked in 1970, and by 1971 they were starting to get flabbier. Engines were being detuned and within another year bigger engines were being dropped.

In 1973 many muscle cars were a shadow of their former selves. And they were finished off by the oil crisis of late ’73. Long lines at gas stations and soaring prices were a real shock, and so was a 55 mph national speed limit. Gas guzzlers were irresponsible, expensive and unwanted, it didn’t matter how much fun they were.

So there you have it. I now know what happened to all that brute power. Some exaggeration had pushed listed horsepower up. A fairer, more accurate measuring system brought it down. Emission controls brought it down more, and soaring insurance costs made ground-thumping power too expensive to own. The oil crisis finished the muscle car off.  This case was solved.
